2005 Nike Friendlies
The u16, 17, and 18
Vardarstars boys teams participated in the 2005 Nike Friendlies which
took place at the IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida, which houses the US
U17 Residency Program. The US Soccer sponsored four day event began on
December 1st
with the teams facing 4 games against the strongest clubs from
throughout the country.
The prestigious,
invitation only, event proved to be a valuable experience for all the
boys as they faced quality competition while they exhibited their skills
under the watchful eye of college coaches and the US National
Staff.
The U16s coached by
Dave Hicklin went undefeated as they overcame FC Delco 4-0, So Cal
United 1-0, Santa Rosa 3-2, and tied Arsenal 2-2. Coach Hicklin stated “
It was a great event as we were able to play against California teams
which we do not often get to do. It was also great for the kids to play
at the IMG in front of the National Staff.”
The U17s coached by
Steve Seargeant also went undefeated as they beat So Cal United 2-1,
Irvine Strikers 1-0, Richmond Strikers 4-0, and tied Blackwatch 0-0.
Coach Seargeant stated that “ the facilities and the competition were
fantastic. The boys played great and proved their quality in front of
the college coaches.”
The U18s coached by
Ralph Torre faced a very tough four game schedule as they were defeated
by the Surf FC, tied the Pateadores 1-1, lost a heartbreaker to the
Arsenal 1-2, and were defeated by the National Champions Dallas Texans
0-3. Coach Torre stated “ It was a great opportunity for those players
still looking for a college scholarship as there were many coaches
looking to finalize their recruiting classes. It was also a fantastic
event we faced some of the finest teams in the country and that it will
help us prepare for the upcoming season.”
The Vardarstars
organization proved that they are among the elite clubs in the country.
The boys both off and on the field displayed the quality of character
that the club works very hard to achieve. We are very proud that these
three teams represented the club with such class and we look forward to
being involved in the 2006 event.
